Whitney Russell
Harmony's most promising tennis player, Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald's best friend, and the woman Chad Harris is in love with despite her sister Simone believing the opposite. Played by Brook Kerr, 1999 to 2007. When you have a character this loyal in a town that keeps testing that loyalty, you are going to get something.
Active · HarmonyPresent Situation
Whitney Russell is, at press time, in a situation of considerable romantic complexity. Chad Harris is in love with her. She is developing feelings for Chad. Her younger sister Simone is also in love with Chad and believes, based on something Chad said while injured and medicated, that he loves her. Whitney knows the truth of Chad's feelings. She is trying to protect Simone from this information while simultaneously managing her own feelings. The Gazette considers this an unsustainable position.
Her best friend Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald is currently embroiled in the Ethan situation, which Whitney has been managing on Theresa's behalf since it began. Whitney's loyalty to Theresa is, this paper observes, consistently tested and consistently maintained.
Background
Whitney Russell grew up in Harmony as the eldest daughter of T.C. and Eve Russell, and her childhood was shaped primarily by two facts: her father's consuming investment in her tennis career, and her friendship with Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald, which began in childhood and has proven one of the show's most durable bonds.
Whitney was not big on dating. She focused on tennis at her father's insistence, and tennis gave her both a future and a father who paid attention. She was content with this arrangement until Chad Harris arrived in Harmony. There was, as she has noted, just something about him. Unfortunately, the same something appealed to her younger sister Simone, and the resulting triangle has been the defining tension of Whitney's recent life.
Theresa
Whitney's friendship with Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald is one of the show's most consistent relationships: two women with wildly different approaches to life who have been each other's primary support since childhood. Whitney is the sensible one, the one who pulls Theresa back from the edge, who covers for her and then argues with her about it, who goes to bat for her even when she probably should not.
Chad has tried to help his friend Ethan understand what Theresa has done, creating a conflict of loyalties between Whitney and Chad on top of the romantic one. The Gazette notes that Whitney's friendship with Theresa is, structurally speaking, load-bearing.
Tennis
Whitney is a genuinely talented tennis player being pushed toward a professional career by a father who is living his own thwarted ambitions through her. T.C. Russell is a demanding and, at times, harsh coach, and Whitney has absorbed both his drive and his expectations. Whether she actually wants the career her father wants for her is a question the show will eventually require her to answer.
T.C.'s disapproval of Chad Harris is partly about Chad's influence on Whitney's focus and training schedule. The Gazette notes that T.C. Russell has a general disapproval of anything that diverts Whitney from tennis, and that Chad Harris is currently diverting Whitney from tennis.
