Russell Family · Patriarch · Former Tennis Star

T.C. Russell

Husband of Eve. Father of Whitney and Simone. Former tennis prodigy whose career was ended by a hit-and-run. He blames Julian Crane. This attribution is incorrect in ways he does not yet know. He also has a shed, the contents of which remain one of Harmony's most pressing open questions.

Present Situation

T.C. Russell had a great many lines this week, none of them about the contents of his shed. The Gazette's senior correspondent noted this with some frustration. The shed remains locked. The shed has been locked for as long as this paper has been covering Harmony. The Gazette wants to be very clear about its commitment to shed closure.

He is, when not adjacent to the shed question, a devoted husband to Eve and an intensely demanding tennis coach to his daughter Whitney. He blames Julian Crane for the car accident that ended his own tennis career. He is incorrect about this and will eventually learn why, which this paper is not looking forward to.

Background

T.C. Russell grew up in Harmony and was, in his youth, a tennis prodigy with a future bright enough that the town expected great things. That future ended on the day a car hit him and injured him too severely to compete professionally. He has blamed Julian Crane ever since, and his hatred of Julian has been one of the defining facts of his adult life.

He married Eve Johnson, a doctor, and they have built what appears to be a model family in Harmony: two daughters, a stable home, and a reputation for decency. The Gazette notes that the model nature of this family is under pressure from several directions that T.C. does not yet fully appreciate.

Whitney

T.C.'s older daughter Whitney is an extremely capable tennis player who is training under her father's demanding instruction. T.C.'s investment in her tennis career is, by most observers' accounts, a transference of his own thwarted athletic ambitions. Whitney has recently fallen in love with Chad Harris, a development T.C. regards as a distraction. The Gazette considers T.C.'s position on Chad misguided as a summary of the situation.

Julian Crane

T.C.'s hatred of Julian Crane is ferocious and long-standing. It is based on the belief that Julian was driving the car that hit T.C. and ended his career. Julian was not driving that car. Eve was. This is one of the secrets Eve has kept with the most determination, because the revelation would devastate T.C. in a way she cannot bring herself to cause.

T.C. and Julian's scenes together are characterised by T.C.'s barely contained rage and Julian's defensive condescension, and the Gazette notes that they are among the show's more reliably entertaining encounters even without the audience knowing the full truth.
