Julian Crane
Drunken philanderer, reluctant patriarch, and, against all available evidence, a man capable on occasion of something resembling a heart. You put Julian Crane in a scene and you are going to get something.
Active · HarmonyPresent Situation
Julian Crane announced his divorce to Ivy Crane this week while in bed with Rebecca Hotchkiss, which this paper considers a delivery method of some confidence. Ivy threw three vases. Alistair called to reprimand him for attending to his own perverse needs rather than managing the Crane family's public relations situation. Julian excused himself for a glass of brandy.
He is now engaged to Rebecca Hotchkiss. Crane Manor is being redecorated in Rebecca's fashion. Ivy is still in the building in a powersuit. The Gazette is monitoring the property situation.
The Crane Inheritance
Julian was born the eldest child of Alistair Crane, patriarch of Harmony's ruling dynasty, and raised as heir apparent to the Crane empire. His father's approval proved a permanently receding horizon, and that is a tough situation to grow up in. In his early years on the show, Julian served primarily as Alistair's instrument, helping to separate his sister Sheridan from Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, persecuting the Lopez-Fitzgerald family broadly, and conducting a marriage to Ivy Crane that was loveless by any observable metric and loveless by mutual agreement.
He compensated with drink, philandering, and an extensive wardrobe. Whether this represented damage or character is something this paper has thought about. The answer is probably both.
The Ethan Situation
Julian raised Ethan as his own son and heir, a fact that made the paternity revelation, specifically that Ivy had an affair with then-police-chief Sam Bennett, a private catastrophe even as Julian presented it as mere administrative correction. He is furious. He is also heartbroken, which he will not say aloud under any circumstances available to this reporter.
He has since divorced Ivy. Ethan, stripped of the Crane name, is processing his new circumstances with more grace than could reasonably have been expected of him, though the Gazette notes he remains quite loud about it.
Rebecca Hotchkiss
Rebecca Crotchkiss, as the Gazette prefers to call her, is Julian's on-again companion, co-schemer, and purveyor of elaborate costuming scenarios. Their relationship is difficult to characterise in family-publication terms and this paper is not going to try. She organised this week's soiree. She invited the press. She ensured Ethan's paternity revelation had the widest possible audience.
