Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald
Has loved Ethan since the beginning. Will love Ethan at the end. Has married Julian Crane in the interim, which was complicated and largely not her fault.
Active · WaitingPresent Situation
Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald is, at press time, engaged to Ethan Winthrop. The path to this outcome involved: Theresa admitting she opened the attaché case and released the secret, a bad dream in which Ethan called off the wedding, and a waking version of events in which he did not. Rebecca Hotchkiss called her a guttersnipe twice this week. The Gazette logged both usages without comment.
She has been waiting for this since 1999. The Gazette considers the engagement a significant development and is prepared to say so.
The Ethan Problem
Theresa has loved Ethan Winthrop since she was a teenager and he was Harmony's golden heir. This love has been, at various points: reciprocated but unacted upon, acted upon and then withdrawn, and the subject of Gwen Hotchkiss's sustained opposition. Passions does not reward the innocent and this paper has observed that consistently.
The Gwen Factor
Gwen Hotchkiss married Ethan. This is the central obstacle and a significant one. Gwen is committed to her marriage in the specific way of someone who knows that Ethan's heart is elsewhere and has decided to hold the legal line regardless.
Character
Theresa is one of the show's most written-about characters and one of its most polarising. Her devotion to Ethan reads, depending on who you ask, as either romantic constancy or a level of fixation that would concern a trained professional. The Gazette does not adjudicate this question. We note only that she has been consistently there for him, and that the show has always seemed to know she and Ethan belong together, even when it declined to let them get there. When you have a love story this committed you really cannot lose, and Passions has always understood that.
