Present Situation

Rebecca Hotchkiss organised the soiree at which Ethan Crane's paternity was revealed to the widest possible gathering of Harmony society. She invited the press. She ensured maximum exposure. This paper covered the event in Issue No. 1 and notes that the logistics were, by any objective measure, well-executed.

She is now, at press time, engaged to Julian Crane, whom she was found in bed with upon Ivy's return to Crane Manor. She has hired Harper at Law to handle Julian's divorce from Ivy. She has hired decorators. She is reading the paper coverage of the paternity situation from a bubble bath. The Gazette considers this an admirable level of operational composure.

Background

Rebecca Hotchkiss comes from a line of Osborn women with a documented history of manipulation spanning centuries. Tabitha Lenox, who has been alive for most of those centuries, has referred to this heritage specifically. The Gazette notes that one of Rebecca's ancestors reportedly arranged the assassination of Abraham Lincoln for personal reasons, which this paper considers a significant family precedent.

Rebecca herself grew up bathed in wealth and was expected to marry accordingly. She set her sights on Jonathan Hotchkiss and stole him from his fiancée Clarissa Morton. Their marriage proved sour when Rebecca discovered Jonathan had married her for money. He is now deceased. Rebecca's eye wandered during the marriage, and she conducted an affair with JT Cornell, a tabloid editor. The Gazette notes that this connection will become significant.

Gwen

Rebecca's primary project since arriving in Harmony has been securing Ethan Winthrop as a husband for her daughter Gwen. She was thrilled when Gwen and Ethan met and fell in love because she wanted her daughter to be rich, powerful, and happy. When Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald entered the picture, Rebecca immediately recognised the threat and warned Gwen.

"She recognised the same lies and manipulations from what she herself had done as a younger woman. The Gazette considers this self-awareness, of a kind."

Rebecca's warnings did not prevent Ethan from postponing the wedding and pursuing Theresa. They have, however, informed Rebecca's subsequent strategy, which has been to ensure that Gwen remains the legal obstacle to whatever Ethan and Theresa might otherwise manage.

The Soiree

Rebecca organised the soiree at which the Ethan paternity disclosure occurred. She invited the press. She positioned the event to ensure maximum attendance from Harmony's social and media circles. The disclosure played out in front of the widest possible audience. Ivy lost her marriage the same night. The Gazette covered both developments in Issue No. 1 and notes that Rebecca's event planning is, whatever else might be said about her, extremely effective.

Alistair subsequently reprimanded Julian for attending to his own perverse needs during a Crane family public relations crisis. The Gazette notes that the soiree was Rebecca's idea and that Julian attended it willingly.

Julian and the Current Arrangement

Rebecca and Julian Crane have been companions, co-schemers, and, by Julian's own description, in an arrangement this paper cannot characterise in family-publication terms and will not try. When Ivy returned to Crane Manor this week, she found Julian and Rebecca in bed together. Julian announced his divorce. Ivy threw three vases. Rebecca read the resulting press coverage from a bubble bath.

They are now engaged. Rebecca has hired decorators. Ivy is still in the building in a powersuit. The Gazette considers this a property situation worth monitoring.
