Lopez-Fitzgerald Family · Matriarch
Pilar Lopez-Fitzgerald
Wife of the absent Martin Fitzgerald. Mother of Antonio, Luis, Theresa, Miguel, and Paloma. Housekeeper at Crane Manor. Has suffered more than is reasonable to ask of one woman, and this paper has noted that consistently, and will continue to note it.
Active · Long-SufferingPresent Situation
Pilar Lopez-Fitzgerald is, at press time, running the Lopez-Fitzgerald household alone, as she has been for approximately fourteen years since her husband Martin Fitzgerald disappeared. She works as a housekeeper at Crane Manor. She raised five children on that income. The Gazette considers this a significant achievement and notes it without qualification.
Her daughter Theresa is embroiled in the Ethan situation. Her son Luis is in a bath with Sheridan Crane. Her son Miguel is in love with a girl who is currently in a hell closet. Her husband is missing. Pilar is managing.
Background
Pilar Lopez was born in Mexico and immigrated to Harmony, where she met and married Martin Fitzgerald. Together they had five children: Antonio, Luis, Theresa, Miguel, and Paloma, the youngest, who was sent to be raised in Mexico by relatives when Pilar could not support all the children alone after Martin's disappearance.
She has worked as a housekeeper at Crane Manor for much of her adult life in Harmony, a position that has put her in proximity to the Crane family's scheming at close range. She has also been in proximity to Ivy Crane, who was less than entirely sympathetic to Pilar's situation as a working mother with a missing husband.
Faith
Pilar Lopez-Fitzgerald is one of the show's most devout Catholic characters, a fact that is woven into her daily life rather than deployed episodically. She prays. She attends Father Lonigan's church. She has maintained her faith through circumstances that would strain a lesser person's considerably. The Gazette notes that Pilar's faith is not a dramatic device but a characterisation, and that Passions handles it with more consistency than might be expected.
The Children
Managing five children with different crises in progress simultaneously is Pilar's primary occupation beyond the Crane Manor housekeeping. She has watched Theresa pursue Ethan with a ferocity that keeps Pilar in a permanent state of resigned prayer. She has watched Luis fall in love with Sheridan Crane and held her tongue about what she knows of the Crane family's history with the Lopez-Fitzgeralds.
Paloma, the youngest, was raised by relatives in Mexico because Pilar could not support all the children after Martin left. This is a wound the family has not fully processed and one the Gazette expects to become more significant.
