Harmony High · The Nerd
Reese Durkee
Not even the internet can save us now. Reese Durkee said this. He built a ghost containment unit. He is, by any fair assessment, the most technically capable person in Harmony, which has not helped him with Kay Bennett.
Active · On the InternetPresent Situation
Reese Durkee is, at press time, the person most responsible for the progress made on the Charity situation this week. He hacked the Vatican on a tiny computer stored in the cargo pocket of his sweater. He identified the Bladder of Lucifer as the solution. He was well-fed throughout. His credentials were questioned twice, once on the grounds of the sweater.
Simone Russell suggested rebooting when Reese could not download the required file. Reese was rude about the suggestion. The suggestion was correct. The Gazette is noting this.
Background
Reese Durkee is the son of a Harmony accountant and has been a fixture of the Harmony High social scene since the beginning of the show, primarily as the token nerd in Miguel's friend group. He is characterised by his reliance on the internet at a time when this was considered unusual enough to be a source of comedy, his extensive knowledge of local supernatural history, and his persistent, unrequited, and largely unacknowledged crush on Kay Bennett.
Kay finds him loathsome. This has not discouraged him. The Gazette notes that Reese's situation with Kay could be read as a mirror image of Kay's situation with Miguel, and that this irony appears to have escaped everyone involved.
The Containment Unit
Reese's construction of a functioning ghost containment device is this paper's story of the week on the technology beat. He built it, it worked, it caught Hecuba, and then Kay freed Hecuba and opened a portal to hell. The Gazette wants to be clear that the unit functioned correctly. The problem was not the unit.
Jessica Bennett
Reese eventually dated Kay's younger sister Jessica, who had harboured a crush on him for some time. The relationship was complicated by Kay and Tabitha's machinations, which nearly resulted in Reese sleeping with Charity Standish in early 2004. Jessica was furious and broke up with him. He dropped off the show shortly thereafter.
The Gazette notes that Reese is one of the few characters in Harmony whose departure from the canvas was caused primarily by other people's supernatural interference rather than his own, which it considers a distinction worth marking.
